Phil Gonzales
Phil Gonzales grew up immersed in the world of gymnastics, where his passion and talent quickly set him apart. He is a Los Angeles City High School All-Around Champion and a United States Gymnastics Federation National All-Around Junior Olympic Champion. After a successful high school career, Phil received full-ride gymnastics scholarship offers from major universities including USC and UCLA, ultimately signing with the University of California, Berkeley.
Following two Achilles tendon injuries and successful recoveries, Phil went on to continue his athletic career at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he met his wife, Joann—also a gymnast. The two recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary, a testament to their shared love of the sport and one another.
Phil’s coaching career has spanned decades and numerous respected institutions. He has coached at Gymnastics Olympica, Le Club Gymnastics, Monarchs Gymnastics, Action Academy, Cheer Force, and several local high schools including Moorpark, Newbury Park, and Oaks Christian. His dedication to developing athletes has left a lasting impact on countless students, from recreational gymnasts to competitive athletes.
In addition to his coaching career, Phil proudly served with the Los Angeles City Fire Department for 31 years, embodying commitment, service, and leadership both in the gym and in the community.
